Phoenix College Highlight - Faculty - Joe Drosendahl

At Phoenix College, we're so fortunate to have such an incredibly talented faculty and staff. Throughout the year, we want to take a moment and recognize all of the really unique and interesting things that they are doing both on-campus and off.

Today, we wanted to highlight Geologist, Joe Drosendahl. He's the Schist! 

Mr. Drosendahl is from upstate New York just outside Buffalo. He is married and has two sons from a previous marriage. Joe has rafted through the Grand Canyon, hiked to the top of the San Francisco Peaks and to the bottom of Meteor Crater. He loves geology!

When did you join the Phoenix College faculty: 

  • Fall semester of 2011 as an adjunct faculty

  • I have taught (part-time) at several other community colleges for the last 25 years:

    • Scottsdale

    • Chandler-Gilbert

  • Before coming to Phoenix College, I worked at the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality as a hydrologist assisting in cleaning up groundwater contaminated with petroleum.

    • Numerous undergrad classes: Minerology, Paleontology, Petrology, Structural, Geomorphology, Field Methods, etc.

  • ASU, Tempe, AZ (M.S. in geology)

    • Numerous graduate classes: Glacial, Plate Tectonics, Remote Sensing, Geology of the Grand Canyon, Periglacial, Environmental, Soil Mechanics, etc.

    • Thesis: Environmental Geology of the Eastern Portion of the Rio Salado Project, Phoenix, AZ  

Current projects:

  • Currently teaching an Honors Class (GLG 101/103)

  • Developing outreach activities, displays, etc. to attract students to the Geology Program

Favorite Moment while at Phoenix College: 

  • Developing several field trips for students:

    • Jerome, Montezuma’s Well, Tonto Natural Bridge

    • Sunset Crater and Wupatki Ruins

    • Payson fossil site

  • Helping to develop and lead the Geology of the Grand Canyon field class (GLG 121) with Dr. Abeer Hamdan

  • Meeting the diverse collection of students from throughout the world.
